When a bar or any other piece of soft iron is placed inside a solenoid (cylidrical coil of insulated wire) carrying an electric current, it gets magnetised and bahaves as a magnet as long as the current is on. When the current is switched off, the magnet netism disappears and the piece of iron reverts to its original unmagnetised state, while magnetism in a parmanent magnet is a static phenomenon.
